In January 2025 I spent ten days in the Gambia I managed to photograph many different birds during
this vacation.
This trip was not focused on bird photography, but I came across many opportunities to capture
birds.
At first I stayed in a pleasant lodge in the Kassagne region.
Then I went to the coast for four days..
In Kassagne
I stayed in a lodge that is set up in the middle of nature. A creek flows by
the lodge. The water in the creek varies with the tides. The banks of the creek are overgrown with
mangrove. In the bushes many kingfishers, wading birds, herons, starlings, pigeons.... Within
walking distance
from the lodge there are wetlands where many more birds can be found.
After my stay at Kassagne I moved to the coast, to Kololi. Here I stayed in a good hotel, with a park-like garden.
As a result, there were many birds present, especially if you get up early in the morning.
Kololi
From Kololi I went to Kotu creek / Kotu bridge for a morning excursion. Along the Kotu Creek and
along the paths through the surrounding rice fields you can find a large variety of birds. The guide
can take you into the creek with a small boat. At the Kotu Creek Bridge you can hire a good
birdguide. I was linked to an
experienced bird guide, who was very knowledgeable. Afterwards it turned out that he had
kept track of which species we had encountered. This saves a lot of time in processing the
photos afterwards.
The bird tour was handled by rivergambiatours/They organized the guide and picked me up at the hotel
Gambia has an institute that trains birding guides for about three years. For birders they are
excellent. As a bird photographer you will have to look for the best composition and the right
lighting, because that is something they don't take into account.
Kotu creek
Ik heb gebruik gemaakt van de Nikon Z9 in combinatie de 100-400 tele zoom. Een enkele keer heb ik
ook
de 1.4 teleconverter gebruikt.
